Santakavita Mandalam residents welcome Sayanna Gadda canal repairs
March 3, 2008.
This week, the people of Santakavita Mandalam, Srikakulam DIstrict are
extremely happy to learn that the Government of Andhra Pradesh has
sanctioned Rs 3.4 crores for repair of the Sayanna Gadda canal. For
the past 2 years Association for India's Development, India's
(AID-India), Srikakulam Chapter, along with the people from about 25
villages has been demanding the repair of this canal that causes annual
flooding of over 1000 acres of agricultural land. Since the monsoon of
2006, when villagers refused to take compensation for crop loss from
the government but demanded permanent solutions, AID-India had
organized series of village meetings and collected signatures and
mobilized people to meet with the collector and write to the Irrigation
department.

Here is a photo feedback of the Jansahyog humanitarian relief supported
by AID. Foodgrains were provided to 110 adivasi (tribal) families of
Akkalkua Tehsil, Maharshtra in the months of December 2007 and January
2008. Each family was provided 2 quintals (200 Kg) food-grains
(Jowhar/makkai), 20 Kg pulses (urad/chana/chowli), 2 Kg salt and 1 Kg
chilli powder (at a cost of about Rs 3 lakhs for 110 families). The
latest distribution coordinated by Suhas Kohlekar on behalf of Bombay Sarvodaya Friendship Center follows the one before
Diwali, when 220 families were provided food grain relief (180 of them
in Madhya Pradesh who were given wheat as food grain). Why do they need foodgrain relief? | Slideshow

Email Update on Feb 11, 2008 from Madhumitta Dutta
Last night there was a clash between villagers from Govindpur and goons from Paradeep port. Since the goons were armed, the villagers retreated and erected barricades and are now standing guard. Meanwhile 300 armed orissa police moved in last night and surrounded Dinkia and this morning 300 more joined in, which means 600 armed police force is right now closing in on dinkia. People haven't slept the whole night fearing police action, very tense situation as you can imagine. Sign Petition | Read Background | See film
