Report by Aid Volunteer Nina Shubho Bijoya! (Greetings) I was in Calcutta (Kolkata) this year for Pujo [In case you are wondering Pujo refers to Durga puja, worship of goddess Durga. It marks the prime festivity of the year that crosscuts religion, rituals, and even language and to some extend nation]. It was marred by heavy rain. The day I set off it had rained 100mm (~3.9 inches) in one single day in Kolkata! You can imagine the state of the road, drains, telephone, and electricity. Roads that were already dug up for post monsoon road, pipe, telephone, electricity, pujo-pandals, and myriad other works now caved in creating not just holes and bigger holes but craters. Pujo however continued. I remained mostly cocooned indoors and did the “thakur-dekha” business (pandal hopping to see the Pandals, decors, festivity, and idols of Durga) in the television. People still went out pandal hopping, often in knee-deep murky water with kids, raincoats, and umbrellas. Amazing enthusiasm! The rain one day was not enough almost the entire 5-days there were some amount of heavy or light rain keeping the atmosphere soggy. |

Report prepared by Arun, Somu and Jerrah
Buoyed by the tireless work of the RTI leaders on the ground in India, volunteers of Association for India's Development – College Park chapter organized a Right to Information workshop for the local Indian community of the DC Metro Area at Univ of MD, College Park. The workshop was aimed at creating basic awareness on RTI among the attendees. The workshop was started with an inspiring video on the RTI campaign in Delhi by Parivartan – one of the leaders of the campaign in India. It was followed by a presentation on RTI that touched upon the various aspects of the act including exclusions and also the bodies responsible for implementing it. How effectively people have taken to it in India was illustrated with a series of incidents from the ground. The audience was enthralled at how RTI was making a difference to every day life like passport, ration card applications, electricity connections, proper roads. They also got to see how the local people got to overthrow a Government order in a particular case. Another perspective of how unresponsive the Government and other departments have been inspite of RTI in some areas was also discussed. |

Dear friends, It is 15 years since Association for India's development created channels by which people in the USA and in the cities of India could connect with the rural masses of India. Windows of opportunity to do something meaningful opened when it became possible to identify villages without schools, wells and electricity, collect donations from well-meaning individuals and find collaborators in India with whose partnership projects in education, rural development, health etc could be taken up. By building bridges with progressive community, women's groups and motivated citizens we have opened doors to activists and social workers who in the midst of their phenomenal work found time to visit and inspire us. Despite hectic work and school schedules the commitment of our volunteers grew and we went to the cause as much as the cause came to us. Through AID-India, enriched by several volunteers quitting their jobs and working full-time for the cause, and by joining several grassroots movements, we ourselves have gotten the first-hand experience of ourselves working with the underprivileged or overexploited of India. |
