Samaj Parivartan Samuday (SPS) works in northern Karnataka on issues of
grassroots empowerment. An AID volunteer visited 3 districts in which
SPS works.
"As I
looked back on the bund in the soft rays of the setting sun, it blended in with
its surroundings. This humble human effort stood for everything that big dams
undermined – respect for nature and human lives, benefits accrued locally
without being exported, and decision making did not have to be the prerogative
of far off power centres. In the case of big dams, costs and benefits have
never been co-located, either geographically or socially. We left the bund site
with a mental note of 'small is beautiful'.".... |
