The looting of the rations (subsidized goods) meant for the poor of several villages in the Jariya and Udikel Panchayats of the Karra Block has been going on without any obstruction for several years. Each month, entries are made on the Red Cards held by the uneducated and simple village folks, but the villagers do not actually get any materials. The card-holders say, “In all the past years, we have not got anything other than one or two liters of kerosene (per month)”. |

Surodi is a small village (population 700) in drought prone Ahmednagar
district of Maharashtra. With a total support of $15,000 from AID during 2001-2007, Surodi villagers built small cement, stone and mud bunds and checked soil and water erosion. Water table rose and trasformed the agricultural scene in the last 3 years -- its wells have filled up, the
production of milk in village has increased 8 fold. Last year
Surodi villagers sold Rs 40 Lakh of onion. Today there are 7 tractors, 70 motor cycles and 50 mobile phones in Surodi village.

 The following is a brief report on the
ongoing relief work with AID funding done by volunteers of AID-India and Pratham. So far a cost of
about Rs. 38,000/- has been incurred in distribution of food items.
Out of this about Rs. 30,000/- has been incurred in Cuttack city slum
areas helping 500 families, where as Rs. 8000/- has been incurred in
the Kashinagar block of Gajapati district helping about 130 families. |

Featuring AID's NGO partner: Aranyika Even as monsoons have begun flooding many parts of India, here is a heartening story of how Aranyika, an NGO supported by AID, got Rs 18 Lakhs sanctioned from the Government to repair the Tabelagummi Check Dam in Vishakapatnam District, Andhra Pradesh that was damaged in the last monsoon. The work that included mobilization of the Water Users Association, impacts 14 villages that depend on the check dam for their water needs. More Photos |
