Report on Metric Mela organized by AID Bangalore
Campaigns

Report by Satish Kumar Sundaram

AID Bangalore conducted Metric Mela, a fun event involving kids, parents and other adults at the Minerva Circle tuition center on July 22, 2007. Preparations for the event had started a month ago where AID volunteers (Balaji, Senthil, Pushpa, Sathish and others) met with the kids a few times to decide on the flow of event and logistics. The event basically consisted of four booths one each demonstrating measurement of weight, length, volume and time. There was also a registration booth where the participant was given a chit with his/her name and a registration number on it. In each booth the participant would be asked to estimate on the unit being measured. The guess was entered in to a book maintained at each booth after which the actual measurement was taken in front of the person who made the guess. The actual measurement was also entered in to the book. The person who made the closest was given a small prize.

Medha's letter becomes a PIL
Campaigns

Update -- Aug 6: A letter was written by Medha Patkar to the Chief Justice (CJ) of M.P. from Indore Jail regarding atrocities against the agitation, impinging upon right to peaceful protests, using unjustifiable police force and suppressing lawful demand for land based rehabilitation. This was admitted by the CJ as Public Interest Litigation (PIL) and the same will be heard on August 8th. The State Government of M.P. has been asked to respond by that date. Medha Patkar will plead the case of NBA before the CJ of M.P.

Main Demand of Satyagraha: A torch rally (see picture) was held in Badwani on Aug 5 as the Satyagraha continued. Adivasis (tribals/indigenous people) already affected at 122 meters height of Sardar Sarovar dam should be immediately given land-based rehabilitation. More than 2 lakh people still remain in the dam's submergence area.    Background, list of demands and time-line.

AID-India's Accelerated Reading Program in Tamil Nadu Schools

Fact: 50% of Grade V children in Tamil Nadu cannot read a simple paragraph in Tamil.

This is after going to school daily for 5 years! A child not being able to read is the single biggest challenge in primary education.  If children cannot even read a simple paragraph in Tamil, they cannot follow what is done in school. To address this problem, AID India developed Padippum Inikkum (Joy of Learning, or literally, “Reading can be Sweet!”), a program that ensures that children learn to read Tamil fluently within 5 months. The program reached out to 450,000 children in 7300 schools.

Solution: Individual attention and level-specific activities tailored to each child    (Click here to Read More)
