ACTION ALERT | November 10, 2005 NAPM PROTESTS DEMOLITIONS IN RAFIK NAGAR, GOVANDI, MUMBAI.
- 350 - 400 housed demolished
- 20 activists arrested
- Pregnant women and old people manhandled
- Hundreds march to police station
National Alliance of People's Movement protests against the brutal demolitions in Rafik Nagar by Municipal Corporation with the help of police. About 350 -400 houses in Rafik Nagar was bulldozed today near Rafik Nagar, Govandi, Mumabi. People were living in 'Kabaristan' (Cemetery) after their houses were demolished in the last demolition drive. The officials came today with Bulldozers and forcefully evicted the people from the kabaristan and arrested the activists and people who resisted and asserted their right to shelter. The police then forcefully arrested 20 people including activists who were leading the protests. Mr. Simpreet Singh of NAPM was dragged through the ground and thrown into the vehicle. One pregnant woman, Ms Pramila Chaudhari, was manhandled and arrested. The arrested people were taken to Nehru Nagar Police station at Chembur.

Live from Andhra Pradesh: Cyclone and Relief. From: Nisarga Trust, Oct 30, 2005, Chaitanya Jyothi Welfare Society (CJWS), Oct 31, 2005 People of chillakur mandal villages have taken shelter in Thufan Shelters and people in Tada mandal did not have such shelters. Due to heavy floods Pulicat lake is over flooded and drown the huts of STs living around the lake in Tada Mandal. The details are submitted to the govt and they are hopefully distribute food grains today or tomorrow. In the mean time we have decided to spend at least 25,000/- for the distribution of food grains immediately.. There are 374 fully damaged huts deserve support. If we can provide Rs.3000/- per house, they will be able to immediately have huts with the materials from the damaged houses. We also want to distribute 10 Kgs of rice to over 1000 families who are affected in these villages. Simultaneously we are requesting the government to act. For detailed survey click on more. |
