Note from AID partners Jagrutha Mahila Sanghatan

You must have heard about devastating floods in North Karnataka. About 6 districts are severely affected including the districts of Raichur, Koppal, Haveri, Bellary, Bagalkote, Belgaum, Bijapur, Gadag, Gulbarga. Many villages are marooned and destroyed, bridges and roads have been washed away, live-stock (goats, buffaloes/cows etc) is lost, crops have been devastated and many precious lives have been lost. Apart from the damage to the land, building, crops etc. the affected people need support for survival.

On the night of 1st October, 2009 JMS office was flooded upto 4 feet. There were 30 children of the Chilipili child labour school. The waters rose within an hour. Immediately they were evacuated and taken to the church boarding by the Tractor. By the morning of 2nd October waters had receded. However, it left behind 2 ft slush and had washed away all materials within 4-5 ft height from the floor, including clothes, vessels, children's books, food materials (wheat, rice) and bags. A lot of terracotta materials too have got spoiled & washed away.

Along with the water, flash floods were caused by the release of waters from the dam which is 35 kms away, without warning. We are yet to assess the extent of damage.

Children are safe and have been sent to their homes. JMS is slowly bouncing back. However, the district is very heavily affected. Many of the villages of JMS work area have been severely affected. The district was reeling under drought till a few days ago. The grains, clothes, crops and animals (goats) have been lost. The JMS karyakarthas are visiting the villages.

People’s most basic survival necessities such drinking water, food grains, clothes, books for children, kitchen items etc. are a great need just now. Some of the organisations including CHC, Janarogya Andolana Karnataka, Headstreams have made a tentative plan to meet some of the essentials. The proposal lists out the essentials which can be easily delivered. The costing is done considering the unit of the family with 4 members.

Please extend your support  for the families as follows:

You can support one or two items fully or partly for the needy people.
