REPORT: FIELD VISIT OF PETER, AID-Orissa VOLUNTEER
9th  – 12th January 2006 


For a project appraisal visit of Peter to childright’s project area at Bilabadi panchayat of Kandhamal district started on winter night of January 9th when he reached Phulbani on 10th.



On 10th January, he reached the  Peter and Suresh (worker of childright) coming out of bushes collecting Amla from a hill topoffice of childright at Bilabadi village. After taking lunch, Peter met SC and ST women of SHGs. He was keen to understand about the livelihoods, problems and prosperities, social and economic aspects of their life and community initiatives on sustainability. He enquired on different sources of livelihood and suggested many ways which people can practice locally with simple fund and low knowledge base. The topics covered on natural resource management, animal husbandry, organic farming and other possible and viable non-farm income generation activities. He also suggested them many ways of livelihood which people can practice.

On the other day he visited other 3 villages Danga, Sikadi, and Duguda crossing walked hill terrains and interacted with women, children, NFE teacher and village leaders to experience the life and lifestyles of the people in those remote and difficult villages.

The day after, he visited a group of bamboo artisans and some places with agricultural and horticultural practices which was supported by childright couple of months ago.  He also visited our NFE center at village Badajhari and interacted with women and villagers.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

People of village Kakendri, children and Anganwadi teacher and other village leaders got an opportunity to interact with him and vice versa. He also marked some of community’s own vocational skills on traditional mud brick making and other sources of livelihoods.

Before leaving Peter  interacted with our workers and suggested on our way of working, discussed on the scope of the project,  future planning of our organisation and expansion of the project, emphasized to organise on processing of Non Timber Forest Produces and marketing, suggested to start reinforcing the process of community sustainability by sharing local resources among them ( labour against labour, kind against kind, etc) , suggested to have compact program villages as program areas for the proposed project, stressed on need based program and exploring possibilities.
