Indefinite Relay Fast in Solidarity with the Bhopal Gas Tragedy Survivors Twenty-two years after their loved ones were gassed to death, their health destroyed, their dreams shattered, survivors of the 1984 gas disaster in Bhopal continue to suffer at the hands of their own government. For years, the Madhya Pradesh state government has delayed and denied basic means of survival to tens of thousands of Bhopalis: things like clean drinking water, competent health care, and jobs or pensions for those too sick to work. But the Bhopalis believe in their own right to live, and a year ago a group of Bhopal survivors walked 500 miles from Bhopal to Delhi ask the Prime Minister of India for help. Although both the Indian Government and the Supreme Court have ordered the MP government to act, little has been done and the Bhopalis have launched an indefinite hunger strike to demand justice. If the state government doesnÂ’t take action, the Bhopalis -- gassed by Carbide, poisoned by contaminated water, forced into destitution -- may be forced to starve themselves to death. Demands 1. Adequate health care 2. Economic rehabilitation by providing jobs for 10,000 survivors of the disaster 3. Social support in the form of a monthly pension 4. Supply of safe drinking water and toxic waste containment 5. Set up a proper administrative system in charge of long term relief and rehabilitation of the survivors Please sign a petition asking MP government to act on the just demands: http://www.studentsforbhopal.org/FaxAction07/fax_action.php In solidarity with the Bhopali hunger strikers, and to pressurize the MP government, please sign up for the global relay hungerstrike. The list of concerned people who are participating in an indefinite relay fast -- to continue as long as the Bhopal survivors stay on their hunger strike -- is below. If you would like to support the survivors of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy and participate in the indefinite relay fast, please send an email to Vinod Viswanath.
