Aparna
Chidambaram got involved with AID in August 1997 when a group of
students at Duke and NC State Universities seeded their local AID
chapters with a day long fast on the completion of India’s 50 years of independence. After moving to Oregon in 2000, she became an active volunteer with AID Portland
working extensively on fundraising and outreach activities. She was the
Secretary of the chapter in 2003-04 and served as the Treasurer from
late 2004 until May 2007. She has been actively involved with the Village Computer Kiosks project at AID Portland working with Chetna Gala Sinha of the Mann Deshi Mahila Bank in Maharashtra.
She counts her interactions with Chetna and other activists like
Arvind Kejriwal and Swati Desai amongst the most rewarding experiences with AID. Aparna
is the Treasury Administrative coordinator on the EB, and is also part
of the Agriculture cell to pursue her particular interest in
sustainable and organic agriculture. She
has a BE in Metallurgy from the College of Engineering, Pune (India),
an MS in Industrial Engineering from the University of Regina
(Saskatchewan, Canada), and a PhD in Fiber & Polymer Science from
