IIT Delhi, Hauz Khas - 110016

Dear Sir,

The Institute has received your letter conveying your sentiments on the
unfortunate death of a laborer s child who was bitten by a venomous
reptile and another labourer who has been allegedly electrocuted.

In this connection this is to convey that the Institute is very much
concerned about the welfare of the contract labourers working (in
different units of the Institute as well as in the construction projects.
The Institute is assisted by a dedicated team of volunteers comprising of
students, faculty, staff and the campus community who are working with the
members of Minimum Wage Monitoring Committee for the well being of the
contract workers/ casual labour). The Institute is taking all the required
measures to help the dependent family members without any laxity

The Institute has immediately constituted proper enquiry committees, the
copies of which are attached herewith, to look into the incidents in
totality and find out the entire circumstances that led to the sad demise
of the young boy and a petty contractor. A detailed communiqué on these
two incidents are enclosed for your perusal.

The Institute has been sincerely striving to educate the contractors and
the enforcing departments to ensure all necessary measures duly
reiterating the provisions available for the welfare of the contract /
casual labour. A detailed order of directives made is also enclosed for
your kind perusal.

The recommendations of the committees will be taken into consideration
for taking all necessary measures along with payment of suitable
ex-gratia in order to help the family members of the deceased with
humanitarian considerations.

We strongly yearn that no such unfortunate incident should take place on
the soil of IIT Kanpur by accident or error in future.

The Institute has a well-defined mechanism to jump into action in case of
any such unforeseen event, duly investigating the facts and taking the
views of all stakeholders, and considering all statutory provisions, it is
also confident that all required measures would be taken in a sincere
manner taking all concerned along. It is also assured that the Institute
will properly take the views expressed by the alumni fraternity into
account.

Best regards,

Sincerely,

Prof.Sanjay G. Dhande
