Here is a photo feedback of the Jansahyog humanitarian relief supported
by AID. Foodgrains were provided to 110 adivasi (tribal) families of
Akkalkua Tehsil, Maharshtra in the months of December 2007 and January
2008. Each family was provided 2 quintals (200 Kg) food-grains
(Jowhar/makkai), 20 Kg pulses (urad/chana/chowli), 2 Kg salt and 1 Kg
chilli powder (at a cost of about Rs 3 lakhs for 110 families). The
latest distribution coordinated by Suhas Kohlekar on behalf of Bombay Sarvodaya Friendship Center follows the one before
Diwali, when 220 families were provided food grain relief (180 of them
in Madhya Pradesh who were given wheat as food grain). Why do they need foodgrain relief? | Slideshow

WHY DO THEY NEED FOODGRAIN RELIEF?
These families are yet to be rehabilitated by provision of alternate
agricultural land, and their homes and farms have been submerged by the
Sardar Sarovar dam on the Narmada. The food grain relief helps them
survive while they move upwards in search of slopes to cultivate and
pursue rehabilitation with the Government. People have also sought
the cheaper grains via ration through government's Anthyodaya scheme
in the past few months, though this has not reached all families and is
insufficient. Fishing nets provided to some families earlier by BSFC
and Narmada Nav Nirman Abhiyan are also helping. Villages covered in the latest food-grain distribution to 110 families with AID support: Dhankhedi, Chimalkhedi, Bamni, Sindhuri, Danel, and Mukdhi villages of Akkalkua Tehsil, Nandurbar District, Maharashtra. These are tribal villages and each has several hamlets.
Rehabilitation still pending to over thousand families as per Government of Maharshtra's website. |
