Nafisa Barot has been championing the efforts of local communities to achieve self-reliance in natural resources and livelihood in the Bhal region of Gujarat. Nafisaben, as she is popularly known, has served in committees at national and international levels to develop gender-sensitive policies. She has advocated against gender based exploitation in communal conflicts and violence against women. She will be sharing her experience in dealing with these issues being a part of Utthan.  Utthan was founded in 1981, in the Bhal region of Gujarat, India. The region suffers from problems such as salinity, drought, health issues, a patriarchal and casteist system, and violence against women. These problems combined with lack of development opportunities from the government has led to poverty, large-scale migration, illiteracy, and loss of assets. To resolve these problems Utthan works on gender empowerment, livelihood security, and conflict transformation within the wider framework of promoting gender equality and equity, human rights, and improving the quality of life for those on the margins of society.  For More information, please contact Ashish Waghray, 281-433-3505, ashish_aid@yahoo.com (OR) visit www.aidindia.org
