June has been a grave month for the inhabitants of Bhagavanpur and Chandipur, Mother Nature being the primary cause of their woes. Heavy rainfall struck down upon the coastal regions of Eastern India, for nearly two weeks, inundating several low lying areas in West Be ngal, Assam and Orissa. This document outlines the impact of the disaster and the immediate relief efforts undertaken by AID partners in West Bengal.
While
Midnapore was the worst affected region in West Bengal, Bhagavanpur,
Chandipur, Kontai, Patashpur I and II, Egraand Panskura I and II blocks
were not far behind. Several of the villages have been inundated.
“Twenty-five persons have died and over 2.7 million are
affected due to floods till Saturday[June 21] in West and East
Midnaporedistricts,” according to Chief Minister Buddhadeb

AID
is supporting relief efforts through AID's partner Kajla Janakalyan
Samity (KJKS). AID has approved an emergency grant totaling
$10000. They are working on relief efforts in affected blocks of East
and West Midnapore districts.

- Distribution of dry food (Muri, Chira, Biscuits, Sugar), purified drinking water, tarpaulin
- Rescue of people from water logged areas by boat
- Setting up of a medical camp with government doctors. More than 1200 people have been treated by this facility.

The flood has caused serious damage to crops, livestock and infrastructure in the region. The condition of the people affected in the region is awful with spread of skin infections, snake bite, fever, dysentry. Infants children and pregnant women are the worst affected. Normalcy is a long way for the affected vilagers.
