Heavy rainfall struck down upon the coastal regions of Eastern India, for nearly two weeks, inundating several low lying areas in West Bengal, Assam and Orissa. This document outlines the impact of the disaster and relief efforts made in Orissa. For details on the effect and relief measures in West Bengal, click here.
Floods have caused tremendous damage to schools, panchayat offices, roads, electric supply, livestock, crop and drinking water. About one million people have been affected in Orissa alone, with Balasore and Mayurbhanj being the worst affected regions.
The following is a list of the blocks that are affected by the floods: Bhograi, Jaleswar, Baliapal, Balasore, Basta.
AID is engaged in relief work in these areas through the relief organization Unnayan. AID has contributed $10000 towards relief work in these areas, through an emergency grant.

Some of the relief work includes the following:
1. Dry food (Chuda, puffed rice, biscuits, sugar, jaggery, bread), Cooked food packets and water pouches [7742 families in 60 villages of 10 GPs in 5 blocks]
2. Community Kitchen [920 families in 8 villages in Gadighati GP of Rasgobindpur block for 3 days]
3. Public Health (Zeoline, alum, halogen, ORS), hand pump clorination [2100 families in 20 villages of 6 GPs].
4. Fodder [1200 families in 11 villages of Gadighati GP of Rasgobindpur block]
5. Polythene sheets [100 nos]
6. Clothes (lungi, towel, saree) [50 families]
7. Candle & match box [1000 packets each]
8. Rescue of people from marooned villages [People from 6 villages]
