Alternative Health Care For Marginalized Women

This health project is designed to enable people to address various interconnected issues of the health of individuals and community. Ayurvedic Doctors and Herbal medicine experts will instruct, validate existing practices, demonstrate and help in identification, collection and preparation of herbal medicines by women volunteers. Preparation of medicines accompanied by discussion on factors affecting health and nutrition.

 

INTRODUCTION

  • Women in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, organize into self help groups and get   trained in basic     primary health care.
  • Health Clinics set up in 7 villages to help identify and treat common illness and diseases
  • Health training for volunteers to organize cultural demonstrations to create health   awareness
 

Features of the Campaign:

 1. Region Covered: 20 villages covering 103 hamlets in Chittoor District.


  2. ACTIVITIES:  

  • Voluntary clinics run by trained women and periodic dissemination of health information to women from these villages through the trained women volunteers and leaders.
  • Organize women in villages as collective forces of change, so that they can be made aware and take ownership of health issues, equal wages, land rights.
  • Build confidence in locally available crops and food for both nutritional requirements and treatment of diseases.
  • Though primarily intended for marginalized women, it is open to all and has been helping all sections of the villages where the project has been implemented.

3.  IMPACT:

  • 40 women trained
  • Demonstrations organized in 6 villages: 14 one-day demonstrations
  • Health Clinics set up in 7 villages
  • Cultural troupe of 25 members trained: 6-day training camp
  • 31 HIV & 38 TB patients identified and referred to the hospital for treatment
