                                             -- UPDATE Jan 9, 2009.

The Parliament has, finally, after years long struggle passed the
Unorganized Sector Workers' Social Security Bill.  The Bill which was
passed by the Rajya Sabha in October last was passed by the Lok Sabha
on the 17th of December. The passing of the Bill is a welcome step
since it is at least one step forward in the prolonged struggle of the
millions of unorganized sector workers, who have borne the brunt of
historical injustice and are still being deprived and neglected by an
increasingly corporate State.

Many of the Trade Union's Campaign and organisations have been
demanding for a Bill that clearly acknowledged the right of
regularisation of the large number of workers that have been wrongly
termed as un-organised. Despite the persistent campaigning and
struggle, the Bill remains weak and to a considerable extent non-
implementable for a large section of the 96% of India's workforce.
After the passing of the Bill there is a dire need of analysing the
Bill as well as chalking out a strategy for the effective
implementation of the same, hence this panel discussion is being
organised. For the panel discussion the invitees are Medha Patkar, Sh.
Raju Bhise, Jagdish Kheraliya, S. Bhatnagar, R. Tiwari, R. Ravi and
others.
