Introducing Haybox in Orissa Manufacturing and selling hay boxes can be a good livelihood activity for women in the villages and also supports bamboo weavers if the product can be marketed well.
My Journey As a Chemical Engineer, I feel very much disturbed that the
contribution from us has been very less [mostly negligible] to overcome
such problems.

Page 11 of 12 5d) Rural Resource & Computer Centre In Srikakulam, we have taken care to ensure that we keep infrastructure to a minimum so that people focus on working in the various villages rather than being centered at a campus. While resource people have stayed for long periods since the beginning of the work in Srikakulam, they were hosted by village families such as by Suryanarayana & Varalakshmi in Tolapi (for the most part), and Kumari in Buradapeta village, and some volunteers in Appalagraharam. The hosting families had very humble dwellings such as one room, verandah and kitchen for a family of 5, which in addition hosted 2-3 people. In the initial years, we did not introduce computers for AID India; workers continue to keep records by hand in notebooks. AID India has not purchased any land so far in Srikakulam. As the work has grown we have taken a slow and steady approach to introducing infrastructure. For example AID-India has purchased a motorcycle for Varahala Naidu (Assistant Coordinator), who will repay the cost in installments and eventually own the motorcycle. Several volunteers have also taken loans from AID India to purchase bicycles. These vehicles help them commute to the villages more efficiently. By the end of 2006 AID India constructed a resource and computer center on Suryanarayana's land at Tolapi village (Pondur mandal). This center would meet office needs and be available for the community to use part time for learning computer skills and accessing reference books and audio visual materials of AID India. Resource persons who make field visits to Srikakulam also stay here. We have purchased a second-hand computer and subscribed to internet in the office. We need 1-2 additional computers to keep in Tolapi and in our field office in Appalagraharam. For construction, we used inter-locking bricks based on the technology made available by Dhanada, Peter and others at ARTRC. Cost of construction for the 2 room + kitchen house was Rs. 1.45 lakhs. This is an advance rent for 15 years, and the ownership is held by Suryanarayana's family. After that period, by mutual arrangement, AID-India would have to pay a rent to continue to use the facility. Apart from this we are also renting a house to serve as an office in Santakavita mandal.
