Introducing Haybox in Orissa   Manufacturing and selling hay boxes can be a good livelihood activity for women in the villages and also supports bamboo weavers if the product can be marketed well.

3c) Children's Reading & Libraries

Village children are continuing to run weekend libraries that are overseen by AID India.  The libraries receive magazines such as Chandamama, BalaMitra, etc regularly.  In addition, the libraries hold Pratham reading cards and booklets, and books purchased from Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam.  The books are stored in the homes of the library monitors (who are children) in each village, and the library sessions are held at a convenient spot which the children decide.

In 2008, AID India conducted the Annual Survey of Education and Reading (ASER) in Srikakulam District.  Conducted by organizations such as Pratham and AID India, these annual surveys help assess reading levels of children in different districts of India.  Working with Pratham, AID Srikakulam also distributed Read India material to various schools and tuition centers in the district.
