Introducing Haybox in Orissa   Manufacturing and selling hay boxes can be a good livelihood activity for women in the villages and also supports bamboo weavers if the product can be marketed well.

My Journey As a Chemical Engineer, I feel very much disturbed that the contribution from us has been very less [mostly negligible] to overcome such problems.

Bhilwara Diaries: The Beginning -- Even after 10 years of living in the States, the shift back to India didn’t seem unnatural.

·         Asked for information using RTI.  The PIO, who was very reluctant about the request, did not even acknowledge the application, and allowed 30 days to pass. Then we filed first appeal.  Still nothing happened and we finally went to Commissioner RTI. Commissioner offices send notice to PIO and to us. After receiving the notice they rushed to us.  This was given after 30 days. Filed complaint because xerox money was asked, while RTI act stipulates that information must be given free if information is not provided within 30 days. After appeal at the state information commission, received the refund of the xerox money.

·         Money was not being given for maintaining equipment such as axe, digging equipment, that the laborers use. Government started giving this money after our complaints. In Sept 2008, filed for 15 families job application and got receipt. Since they did not get work, he applied for unemployment benefits for them

·         In Siripuram village, there was no payment for 500 families for 22 days of work done in April and May. Filed complaints in August and the villagers received money for about half of the days. Rs. 80,000 (from the 4th pay order of this work) was stuck in Pondur post office, as it looked for a bribe from Siripuram post office, which the Siripuram people refused to give. After complaining to the Collector, this money was also released. About 7 days of money for the 500 families is yet to be released for this work. The govt has accepted that it is the fault of their field assistant and says that it will adjust this in future.

Varahala Naidu, Santakavita

Working in 3 villages.

·        In Chintalapeta villages, Rs. 5 / person was deducted when making payments. After our complaints, this stopped.

·        Some challenges – post office is not giving payments if signatures are a little different. Village post offices are not having withdrawal slips to the scale needed for NREGA. For example one payment order covering 3-5 days might require 500 withdrawal slips. Need to follow up with the postal department. Meanwhile we are xeroxing and supplying withdrawal forms to post offices so that payments can be made.

·        We are also doing surveys for (patta / private / encroachment) land for SC / ST families. There is a provision in NREGS that SC and ST’s can develop their lands in this program but so for none got benefited. We want use this data in the next financial year NRGES planning.

Prakash Rao, Hira Mandal

·         Filed job applications for 4 villages, 86 families. The work was given to individuals from 68 families in December (probably the only case where work has been given in this month in Andhra Pradesh).

·         18 individuals did not receive work. On January 17 he got the receiept for submission of unemployment benefit application for these 18 individuals.

P. Simhadri, Sitampeta Mandal (Srikakulam District)

Applied for 250 job cards. 5 members of our team took part in government social audit.
