Sujit Sinha from Swanirvar (http://www.swanirvarbengal.org ) said there has been damage in their area (North 24 Parganas) too. Mainly with banana, coconut and betel trees being uprooted, it is a huge jolt to the livelihoods of small farmers. Sujit-da is going there on Sunday and will have a better picture. It did not sound as grim as South 24 Parganas (mainly Sundarbans). Swanirvar is now working in some parts of Sundarbans and Sujit-da said that there has been devastation there, but they do not have much human-power to do relief work. Service Centre has given them some help and they have sent out a matador full of relief material like milk powder and clothes. Christian AID is also working there. Sujit-da mentioned that no Government aid has reached in parts of the Sundarbans where Swanirvar is working. Further, Sujit-da said that Service Centre is interested in taking up long term post-disaster work, mainly in the field of agriculture. Service Centre has presence in several districts of W Bengal and does good work in agriculture. We should keep in touch with them and try to form a long term partnership, given our organizational interest in agriculture. |
