Visit report from AID-Kolkota volunteer

Shayan Khan visited  AID supported work of BTS/Mukti in Sunderbans.  This is the report and photo feedback from the visit.

June 1:

I have visited many cyclone hit places where BTS and Mukti are working and most of them are worst affected. The basic thing i have done is to try and find the need of the hour most I found out that the needs are:

Food
They are getting foods from various NGOs, panchayat, forest dept. et al

Shelter
Many of them are now taking shelter at local school and community center and the rest of them are at the makeshift home near the road or say road side

Medicine
Due to this water logging they are not getting proper drinking water so they are now getting sick with diarrhea so they need saline and for preventive measure ORS Bleaching powder

Water problem is there because the area has been covered by the salt water, from their fields to ponds. Even now there is water up to  2 and a half feet.   Water is still logged in there....so people are not being able to return to they home nor they able to rebuild their homes.

One of the good things happening  is  that they have organised themselves very well.....Like they have a sarvodalya committee(there are around 4-5) (main camp) and under them there are 6-10 sub camps which are at the inner region. They made it simple -- if we supply the relief materials there it will reach them.

In each of the sub camps there are around 100 to 300 families taking shelter. women helps in cooking and men are trying to rebuild their house or some of them construction the wall of the river to prevent further damage.

Moreover the farmer will not be able to do any kind of farming for at least next one year. The salt water in some places are stinking. people are saying that from these water large number of mosquitoes will come up very soon.

After receving the report from Shayan AID-Kolkata volunteers are trying to mobilize following support to supplement AID US support:

We will get some cloths and medicines from Gunj(Delhi) and Praajak(Kolkata). AID Kolkata will give something from it's funds - but that is too little - since we do not have much of our own. We need to start funds collecting in India. So, those who are in Kolkata, could you please start collecting these materials.
