A situation
report of MANDRA LIONS CLUB AND REFA TEAM ON AILA Affected Bali 1 and Bali
2 of Goshaba Block.
A team of Mandra Lions Club and REFA visited the area on 10th and 11 th June 09. The team went through all the remote corners of the panchatets and we have a detailed discussion with of PRI members at the area. They also talked with the affected families at the river side and at inner part. They visited the villages Satyanarayanpur, Amlamethi, Mathurakhand village of Bali 1, Bali, Bijaynagar and Birajmoni of Bali 2 panchayet. Route Travelled: 09.06.09: Purulia to Howrah (by train) 10.06.09: Howrah to Sialdah(by taxi) Sialdah to Canning (by local train) Traveled canning market for taking rates of relief materials Canning to Dock Ghat (by machine boat Madla river) Travelled dock Ghat market for rate verification of relief goods to Amlamethighat by van through Sonakhali and rate verification of relief goods to Satyanarayan ghat Bidyadhari river (by boat) to Satyanarayanpur, Pritilata Mahila Samiti (by van) visited Amlamathi, Mathurakhand at Bali I GP and also to Chatipara at Bali II. 11.06.09: Bijaynagar, Birajmoni
of Bali II GP. Crossed Gomor River and reached Gosaba market for rate
verification of relief goods. By boat to Gadkhali Sonakhali and fixed the
whole seller for purchase. Traveled to Dock Ghat Canning Sialdah 12.06.09: Howrah Barabhum Bagmundi. Bali 1 Panchayet: Satyanarayanpur
Sansad: We have a detailed discussion with Gour Das Barman,
Khonka Barman, Pramila Das, Sudhamoni Jana.They informed here is no way
to drive out logged water. All the ponds and agricultural lands are still under
water. This year there will be no land for use of cultivation coming years.
This village has got no relief except by REFA. 1000 families have got 3 days
chira (puffed rice) and gur (molasses). Panchayet has also not yet provided any
support. Drinking Water is available here but insufficient and at distance. All
the tube wells at up lands are recovered and getting used. There is scarcity of
water for cattle and bathing water. Community has decided not to pass latrine
near by the village. People have to move 1.5 KMs. for latrine. People are
suffering from Fever, diarrhea, Dysentery, rashes and tonsils. No qualified
treatment is available at sub centers one has to move to Goshaba for
treatment and medicine. House repairing at up lands is going on. Some male
members of the family have moved out side of Gosaba for earning.
Amlamethi
Sansad: We have a detailed discussion with Pabitra Das, Anjana Das, Anil Naskar, Sudhakar Bhuina. There is system to pump out logged water but no initiative is taken to install pump yet. River side areas have got food from Tagore Society, NEWS, Rupayan each for one time relief. But the inner areas have got no relief support except from REFA. There is no such drinking water problem. NEWS has provided 440 nos. Tripals of 15 X 12, Bedding, Milk and medicines to 440 river side families who had lost their houses. Now the area needs Housing, Mosquito net, Cooking Utensils, Clothes and medicines. They have lost all of their belongings and clothing. Now they are living on roads at temporary huts. Housing materials like bamboo, thatches are not available locally all have flooded out. Low lands are still under water. Only brick soling roads are the up land to live temporarily. Mathurakhand
Sansad: We have a detailed discussion with of Santosh Das,
Ujjala Mondal, Kajal Das, Madhabi Das, Kancchan Das, Uma Das.Team
visited the village with them. All the houses are collapsed. Panchamukhi river
dam has broken and flooded the entire village at a moment at gasses of water.
Nothing has been saved except human lives. People are using stolen rice which
was flooded and facing gastric trouble. The entire village is facing the threat
of migration as there is no way of earning. Same as other villages people are
living on roads. Drinking water is available buy not sufficient. There is
system to pump out logged water but no initiative is taken to install pump yet.
People need the dam repairing first. People are trying to repair it with their
own effort before this Kotal. Panchayet member Swapan Das has told that dam
repairing will be start shortly but date is not yet decided. Mosquito net and
cooking utensils are household need to sustain. Bali-II Panchayet: Bijaynagar
Sansad: We have a detailed discussion with Prankrishna
Mondal, Bhagabati Mondal, Manik Mondal, Monila Mondal. One part has got with water drainage system through sluice gate. Here people are still living on roads. The area being low is still water logged and all the houses are collapsed. Saline water has filled up the ponds. This area is severe affected. Sundarban Development Authority has decided to pump out saline water from 3 5 Kattha sized ponds which are own by well off families where as for small ponds own by poor they have no decision. Fishery is a major secondary occupation for the area. No government relief has reached at the area till now. REFA has provided relief to some severely needy families (373 Nos). Gomor River dam had broken and affected the area. However repairing is going on by govt. through contractors. Only river side families have got relief. REFA has been providing relief at inner parts. Housing, road linkage, water drainage are prime area need. Household area needs are the same as other villages. Most of cattle at the village are flooded away.
