Frequently Asked Questions
- How does submergence due to a dam compare with the destruction due
to an earthquake?
We can meaningfully compare the
destruction of the earthquake
to that
of a dam. In the case of the earthquake the fallen debris is proof that
a family lost something. In the case of submergence by a dam the
evidence that the family had land/house is destroyed as it gets buried
under water forever. The fallen rubble of an earthquake inspires people
to set up relief camps. The watery grave on the other hand is silent,
looks beautiful and serene. The people have to suffer the loss with no
images that appeal to the wider human conscience. Perhaps the most
important difference is that once the rubble of the earthquake is
cleared the people have their land to rebuild their homes and
livelihoods. Once people's land comes under a dam's water they lose it
forever.

- Will I be receiving a letter and/or photo from the family
that I will be supporting?
AID will NOT be providing the linkage between one family from the
valley to one family in the US. That does not mean you will not have
contact with the people of the valley.
- We encourage you to talk to volunteers within AID who have
visited the valley,
- follow the www.narmada.org website for frequent
updates,
- visit the valley if you get a chance and work with us
closely to forge deeper relationships.
- Is my donation for the Janasahyog program tax deductible?
Yes. AID is a 501(c)(3) organization in the US and your donation is tax
deductible here in the US. (AID Inc's Federal Tax ID no. is 04-3652609)
- Is there any restriction on the amount that I can donate?
There is no restriction on the amount that you can donate. The
recommended donation for supporting 1 family for a period of 6 months
is $120 and for 1 year is $240. You can support more than one family or
