Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does submergence due to a dam compare with the destruction due to an earthquake?

We can meaningfully compare the destruction of the earthquake to that of a dam. In the case of the earthquake the fallen debris is proof that a family lost something. In the case of submergence by a dam the evidence that the family had land/house is destroyed as it gets buried under water forever. The fallen rubble of an earthquake inspires people to set up relief camps. The watery grave on the other hand is silent, looks beautiful and serene. The people have to suffer the loss with no images that appeal to the wider human conscience. Perhaps the most important difference is that once the rubble of the earthquake is cleared the people have their land to rebuild their homes and livelihoods. Once people's land comes under a dam's water they lose it forever.
